'China and EU moving towards quality relationship': EU trade commissioner Lamy

"China and the EU are heading towards a quality relationship," EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamysaid Monday in Shanghai, which he acclaimed as "an emblem of China's success story".

"China and the EU are heading towards a quality relationship," EU Trade Commissioner Pascal Lamysaid Monday in Shanghai, which he acclaimed as "an emblem of China's success story".

During his one-day visit in Beijing Sunday, Lamy held talks with Chinese Vice-Premier Wu Yi and the newly-appointed Minister of Commerce Bo Xilai.

"We addressed in the productive dialogue the Doha Development agenda, and a number of worries on both sides," he said in the meeting arranged by the European Chamber in Shanghai, which was attended by about 150 EU businessmen and government officials.

China officially became the EU's second largest trading partnerin 2003, with the total trade reaching 135 billion euros at a developing rate of 17 percent. And the burgeoning new relationship between the two major economies has been described as a 'honeymoon'.

"I find the overall temperature of EU-China relationship is still very good. The pot is cooking well, but there are no signs of boiling water," said Lamy.

Lamy also said that he talked with Wu Yi on the new round of Doha talks, and found "EU-Chinese cooperation may be one of the keys to unlock the door to the end of the round".

"China and the EU will both work on the essential issues of the Doha talks, such as agriculture, industrial tariffs, Singapore issues and development. The benefits are high for both the EU and China."

Lamy concluded his Shanghai speech by saying that "the Sino-EU relationship should not only grow in quantitative but also in qualitative terms in order to sustain the honeymoon."
