Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan on Tuesday vowed to further the Sino-Russian military ties in the new year.

Cao, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a State Councilor, made the remarks when meeting with Yury Baluyevsky, the First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, who arrived in Beijing Monday to attend the eighth round of Sino-Russian military consultations.

Cao said with the support of the two heads of state, the China-Russia strategic cooperative partnership has maintained sound development.

He said the Sino-Russian good-neighborly treaty of friendship and cooperation, signed on July 16, 2001, set up a peaceful concept of boosting friendship from generation to generation and never targeting each other as enemies, which fixes a solid legal basis for the long-term development of Sino-Russian ties.

China and Russia also conducted fruitful cooperation in the military field, said Cao, urging both sides to expand cooperation in more areas and push the bilateral military ties to a new stage.

Baluyevsky said in the new prefecture, the re-elected Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay more attention to boosting the strategic cooperative partnership between Russia and China, and the bilateral military ties will also been strengthened.

China, Russia hold military consultations
China and Russia held the eighth round military consultations in Beijing Tuesday, with broad consensus reached, and both sides jointly vowed to further boost cooperation in the future.

The half-day consultations was hosted by Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, and Yury Baluyevsky, first deputy chief of general staff of the Russian armed forces.

The two sides exchanged views on the regional and international security situation, major international issues, cooperation between the two armed forces and other issues of common concern.

The two sides reached broad consensus. They agreed that developing the friendly cooperative ties of the two armed forces is an important component of the strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries.

They shared the same view that to maintain and develop the current friendly cooperative ties between the two armed forces is not only helpful to the defense and military construction of the two countries, but also important to the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership.

Xiong said as it has been the eighth round of military consultations between China and Russia, consensus was reached on almost all issues discussed during each round of consultations, which indicated that both countries shared common concerns and stands on many international and regional issues and had the same wish to further boost bilateral ties.

Xiong also expressed his appreciation to the Russian government for its adherence to the "one China" principle on the Taiwan issue and objection to any words and actions of the Taiwan authority aiming to change Taiwan's position and separate Taiwan from China.

Baluyevsky expressed the hope to further strengthen bilateral consultations with China on major international and regional issues.
