Shadow removed from south China's bird flu-stricken city

Life was finally back to normal in Nanning City of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,as the city was lifted from isolation against the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu on Tuesday.

Life was finally back to normal in Nanning City of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region,as the city was lifted from isolation against the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu on Tuesday.

In the Liangfeng Livestock Company in the southern suburb, workers were loading trucks with chickens. It has a storage capacity of 230,000 chickens which was set up 30 years ago. "We are happy to continue our business now. More customers are coming to negotiate and the market is reviving," said a staff Wei Songhan.

In the city's largest agricultural market Wuliting, people werebargaining on poultry products again. "The daily poultry sales used to be 200,000 kilograms before the bird flu outbreak. Now theamount is climbing back," said the market manager Liu Qingquan.

On streets, roast chickens, ducks and pigeons have re-appeared in food stores. Some old stores even have people waiting in queuesfor roasted ducks.

"We are providing more food since the isolation has been liftedand people have become confident again," said Yang Hui, manager ofShenghui Roasted Duck Restaurant.

"I feel free to eat chicken again. It's time to remove the shadow from our life now," said a citizen Liao Haibo.

The city will keep enhancing the monitoring and prevention of bird flu and set up quarantine zones along the border, said Bi Qiang, head of the regional epidemic prevention headquarters.

China's Ministry of Agriculture announced Tuesday morning the end of isolation in the last two bird flu-hit areas, which are Nanning of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Lhasa of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

To date, China has stamped out all 49 bird flu cases in 16 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions since the first one was confirmed in Dingdang Town, Guangxi's Long'an county on Jan. 27, according to the ministry.
