US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage said Wednesday that the administration will announce new sanctions on Syria very soon.

"There is not a question of sanctions; there will be sanctions and there will be very firm sanctions very soon," Armitage said inan interview with a US radio service.

Armitage acknowledged that Damascus had offered some help for the United States to deal with al Qaeda in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

But he noted that "it is equally correct that the combination of Iran and Syria have continually supported Hamas and Hezbollah."

He warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that he is faced with a decision for the moment. "He's at a fork in the road and hecan either go and have a fine life or he can be further isolated and be the only Baath Party left in the region," Armitage said.

Accusing Damascus of seeking weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorist groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah, the US Congress adopted a bill in November last year calling for tough sanctions against Syria.

President George W. Bush signed the bill into law in December but has not yet carried out the recommended sanctions.
