Afghan Aviation Minister Mir Wais Saddip was assassinated Sunday in the western city of Herat, a government spokesman said.

Unidentified assailants shot Saddip along with two police officers in his car and the three were killed on the spot, presidential spokesman Khaleeq Ahmed said, without giving more details.  Afghan state television reported that Saddip's father, Herat Governor Ismail Khan, was targeted in a separate attack, but escaped unhurt. The governor came under attack when his car passed a house belonging to the commander of the 17th Army Division at 3:30 p.m. local time.

Ismail Khan's bodyguards, in a bid to catch the shooters, were engaged in heavy exchanges of fire with soldiers of the 17th Division. Sounds of gunshots were heard in Herat city. The situation in Herat city was very serious, said the report.
