US vetoes UN measure on Yassin's death
The UN Security Council on Thursday failed to adopt a resolution condemning Israel on its recent "extrajudicial execution" that killed Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, the spiritual leader of the Palestinian militant group of Hamas.
The UN Security Council on Thursday failed to adopt a resolution condemning Israel on its recent "extrajudicial execution" that killed Sheikh Ahmad Yassin, the spiritual leader of the Palestinian militant group of Hamas.
Following days of word by word haggling, the resolution was vetoed by the United States even after the proposers agreed to adda line condemning "also all terrorist attacks against any civilians as well as all acts of violence and destruction."
Explaining his veto killing the draft that was supported by 11 council members, US Ambassador to the UN John Negroponte said the "one-sided" draft failed to condemn Hamas, an alleged extremist group already on the list of sanctions by the council's counter terrorism committee.
The draft condemned the most recent "extrajudicial execution" committed by Israel that killed Yassin and called for a complete cessation of such acts.
It called on all sides to immediately undertake an unconditional cessation of acts of violence, including all acts ofterrorism, provocation, incitement and destruction. It also calledfor the cessation of all illegal measures and practices against international humanitarian law.
In a similar move during the council's open debate held on Monday, the United States, the closest ally of Israel, blocked thecouncil from reaching consensus on a presidential statement condemning Israel's recent killing of Yassin.
