Two more bodies of victims were found on Friday by rescuers and villagers after an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 jolted eastern Turkey late on Thursday, raising the death toll to nine, the Public Works Ministry said.
Istanbul's Kandilli Observatory said the quake, whose epicenter was at the town of Cat in Erzurum province, occurred at 9:00 p.m. local time (1800 GMT).
The temblor was also felt in neighboring provinces, local TV reports said.
Seven of the victims were children and at least 20 people were wounded in the quake.
CNN Turk television said houses in villages across three provinces and near the town of Erzurum suffered serious damage.
As private NTV television reported, the authorities have moved homeless people to schools and sports centers.
Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey. On Aug. 17, 1999, a strong quake hit western Turkey, leaving more than 17,000 people dead.
