Around 400 Afghans on Friday offered collective funeral prayer here for the late Palestinian spiritual leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin to commemorate his struggle against the Israeli occupation.

It was the first time that Afghans ever paid tribute to a slain Palestinian leader while their US-backed government has yet to react to the assassination of Hamas' founder and ongoing Israeli raids against Palestinians.

In a resolution issued after the prayer, the participants termed the Israeli action against the late Hamas chief as a state terrorism and strongly condemned it.

Sheik Yassin was killed on last Monday when an Israeli helicopter launched three missiles at him as he was leaving a mosque after morning prayers.

"We the Afghan nation besides condemning the Israeli oppressivepolicies against Palestine announce our support to the just struggle of Palestinian people against the Israeli occupiers," stressed the resolution.

The resolution also called upon US-installed Hamid Karzai's administration to back all the United Nations resolutions on Palestine and support the peaceful solution of the lingering Middle East crisis.

The 14-article resolution also termed the Israeli nuclear program as a threat to the Middle East as well as the whole regionand urged international community to check the Israeli's ambitiousnuclear arm program.

"It is a matter of regret that the Afghan government opted silent policy with regard to Shikh's martyrdom but we the Afghan nation back Palestinians and their fight for freedom," former Afghan Prime Minister Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai said on the occasion.
