Taiwanese police has dispersed the last group of some 500 protesters from around the office building of the leader of the Taiwanese authorities Sunday morning after five hours of efforts.

Some of the demonstrators moved to a nearby square to continue the protest against the unfair election.

After the end of a mass rally, initiated by the opposition coalition of the Kuomingtang and People First Party on Saturday, Chen Shui-bian held a press conference at 9 p.m., at which he denied the opposition coalition's accusations of the irregularities of the voting and the faking of the shooting to win sympathetic votes. He said he was willing to see a recount and expected a clear result of the shooting.

Chen also agreed to meet with the losing candidate Lien Chan, head of Kuomingtang, and Lien's running mate, James Soong of the People First Party, on Monday, but under the condition that protesters should be instantly removed.

The opposition coalition quickly responded that by holding a press conference, and its spokesman said the mysterious election-eve shooting on March 19 had significantly influenced the election, which had hurt the coalition greatly.

Noting that "the justice that comes too later is not justice any more," the spokesman repeated the demand of recounting the votes and thoroughly investigating the shooting.

Lien Chan and James Soong were also waiting for the meeting with Chen next Monday, he added.

The rally was comparatively peaceful, but thousands of riot police were ordered to besiege and drive away the protesters early Sunday morning. Some of the protesters who refused to leave were carried away by force, and the others left the leader's office building reluctantly, with some of them turning to the near square, claiming to insist the protest.
