Arafat welcomes Hamas demand of joining PNA

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has welcomed a demand made by the Islamic resistance movement Hamas to become part of the decision-making Palestinian National Authority(PNA) in the territories, Palestinian sources said on Tuesday.

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has welcomed a demand made by the Islamic resistance movement Hamas to become part of the decision-making Palestinian National Authority(PNA) in the territories, Palestinian sources said on Tuesday.

Hanna Amira, member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) executive committee, revealed that the committee had held an urgent session chaired by Arafat late on Monday and tackled Hamas'demand.

She told reporters that Arafat and committee members expressed their warm welcome to Hamas' participation.

"Arafat had strongly welcomed this step, considering it as a positive move towards Hamas' joining the Palestinian National Authority (PNA)," she said.

Khaled Mashaal, head of the Hamas' political bureau, has announced his movement's intention to participate in the Palestinian decision-making authority.

The leaders of different Palestinian factions outside the territories have called on Arafat to contact with the Tunisian authorities in order to allow their representatives to join the Palestinian delegation to the Arab summit which was due to be held on Monday but cancelled now.

The Hamas had also voiced its intention to participate in the PLO delegation and to be represented by Mussa Abu Marzouq, while the Islamic Jihad (Holy War) movement's delegation would be represented by Ziyad Naji.
