Sino-Swedish seminar on urban sustainable development

A Sino-Swedish seminar on urban environment administration and sustainable development opened Thursday in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong province,at the joint sponsorship of China's State Environmental Protection Administration and Sweden's Environment Ministry.

A Sino-Swedish seminar on urban environment administration and sustainable development opened Thursday in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong province,at the joint sponsorship of China's State Environmental ProtectionAdministration and Sweden's Environment Ministry.

Swedish Minister for Environment Lena Sommestad said her country's experience facing the transformation from an agricultural country into a modern industrialized one is of use for China to deal with problems in its urbanization advancement.

Wang Jirong, deputy director of the Chinese State EnvironmentalProtection Administration, said China has become aware of similar industrial development in some Chinese cities, low efficiency in resources application, government over-intervention into economic growth and excessive urban planning, constrain the nature of urbandevelopment and functions performed by cities.

China will take to the conception of urban sustainable development and will make efforts to promote the idea nationwide.

More than 250 urban environment management officials, scholars,and experts from both countries exchanged notes at the seminar pertaining to urban environment administration, ecological improvement and coordinated development.

The two countries have agreed to select two Chinese cities as pilots for urban sustained development, so as to set an example for other cities in China to follow.
