US President George W. Bush will meet British Prime Minister Tony Blair at the White House next week to discuss the situation in Iraq and the Middle East, US officials said on Tuesday.

The two leaders, who are expected to meet on April 16, will also discuss an Israeli plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and aplan put forward by the United Nations to reunify Cyprus, US officials said.

Blair has been a vehement supporter of the US-led war to oust the Iraqi regime headed by Saddam Hussein, though Blair has received strong criticism from Britons for participating in the Iraq war.

Echoing a message Bush delivered on Monday of sticking to the June 30 deadline for handing over sovereignty to Iraq, Blair said Tuesday in London that a growing Shiite uprising against the US-led occupation in several cities in Iraq would only reinforce the coalition's determination to build democratic institutions and hand over power to the Iraqis as planned.

The US-led coalition plans to transfer power to Iraq on June 30,but US officials have said that more than 100,000 US troops will remain in the country for about two years.
