Bush discusses Iraq situation with Putin

US President George W. Bush talked over telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday about the situation in Iraq, the White House spokesman Claire Buchan said.

US President George W. Bush talked over telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday about the situation in Iraq, the White House spokesman Claire Buchan said.

Buchan said Bush and Putin, through translation, spoke for 20 minutes about Iraq, the war on terrorism and bilateral relations.

It was Bush's second high-level contact with foreign leaders onIraq in two days. He spoke with British Prime Minister Tony Blair on Wednesday from his central Texas ranch, where he is spending the Easter holiday.

The situation in Iraq has deteriorated as the US-led coalition forces engaged in fightings with Iraq's Shiite Muslim militiamen and over 30 coalition soldiers, including more than 20 US soldiers,and over 170 Iraqis have been killed.

Bush has vowed to stay the course in Iraq and hand over sovereignty to an Iraqi interim government on June 30.
