UN body asks Bolivia to protect migrant workers

LA PAZ, June 7 (Xinhua) -- A United Nations committee Friday urged Bolivia to better protect its migrant workers and abide by international conventions on the matter.

The United Nations Committee for the Protection of All Migrant Workers said in a report that Bolivia is failing to adhere to two agreements in particular promoted by the International Labor Organization (ILO), with one agreement calling on states to provide migrants with free aid and the other to promote equal opportunities for migrants.

"The committee continues to be concerned that discrimination towards certain groups of migrant workers still persists, especially in border areas and refugee zones, on the part of the security forces," the report said.

The UN report said that Bolivia, a signatory to the agreements in 1949and 1975 respectively, has additionally failed to comply with agreements to ensure decent conditions for domestic workers.
