DUSHANBE, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The United States will continue to help the Tajik border troops to strengthen security along the border with Afghanistan even after the pullout of U.S. troops in 2014, press-service of the Tajikistan President Emomali Rahmon said on Tuesday.
E. Rakhmon met Tuesday with the commander of the U.S. Central Command, General Lloyd Ostina (Lloyd James Austin III), who is in Dushanbe for a two-day working visit.
"There was a constructive discussion on the further logistical support to the military and special forces, including border troops in Tajikistan to strengthen the protection of the state border with Afghanistan, especially after 2014," the press service said.
Washington is helping to strengthen the 1,344-kilometer Tajik- Afghan border all the years of its presence in Afghanistan, intensifying it as soon as it became aware of the withdrawal of coalition troops from Afghanistan next year.
"There was expressed satisfaction with the level and content of the relationship, the interaction of the relevant structures of the two countries, including in promoting peace and stability in Afghanistan and prevent the threat of terrorism and extremism," the press service notes.
General L. Ostin noted the important role of Tajikistan in strengthening regional security, and expressed his gratitude to the President and the people of Tajikistan for active assistance in the restoration of peace in Afghanistan.
Local media noted that L. Ostin's meeting with E. Rakhmon took place two days prior to working visit of the president of Tajikistan to Russia.
