Beijing's Air Pollution Control Work is Arduous
A law-enforcement inspection team headed by Zou Jiahua, vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, ended their 5-day inspection of Beijing's implementation of the Air Pollution Control Law on May 25 and issued a circulation on the result to the Beijing municipal officials. The circulation showed that some measures taken by Beijing are rather effective in curbing the deterioration of air pollution. But in spite of a much improved air quality, the pollution is still very serious. An persistent effort for air pollution control should be made.
In a recent period, especially after the second half of last year, Beijing municipality has taken a series of measures to tighten its control over air pollution: improve fuel structure, control pollution caused by coal smoke, control tail gas emitted by vehicles, renovate automobiles fueled by gas, lessen dusts from construction sites, and control sources of industrial pollution. The measures have achieved some preliminary effects. According to environment monitoring, the air quality in Beijing has been improved.
But the present air quality in Beijing is far from meeting the demand of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council and the standard for international metropolis. Index shows that Beijing still ranks among the cities of serious air pollution.
The team conducted the inspection of Beijing from May 21-25.
