Rescue teams: professional skills make rescue work quicker and efficient

Rescue effort is the critical stage in dealing with aftermath of earthquake. Rescuers risked their lives to save people and property in earthquake-devastated areas.

Li Feng is a rescuer working in the Lushan quake-hit zone; he was a survivor of the Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008.

Li felt strong tremor when he was still sleeping on the early morning of April 20, 2013, the day when a deadly earthquake hit Lushan.

After learning the 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Lushan County of Ya’an city, Li and 50 local residents formed a rescue team and quickly rushed to Lushan with local government’s approval.

Li’s mother and wife are from Ya’an, and his four-year-old son was born in No.1 People’s hospital of Ya’an half a year after the Wenchuan Earthquake. He clearly remembers that the hospital exempted his pregnant wife from all medical fees because she was transferred from quake-stricken zone in Wenchuan in 2008.

“Ya’an had helped me before, if the local government doesn’t send people to rescue, I will also make effort on my own side”, he said. Having experienced the Wenchuan Earthquake, he feels grateful to everything.

At 2 a.m. of the first day after the Lushan Earthquake, the rescue team from Wenchuan arrived at the worst hit zone - Longmen Township, and started rescue work without delay.

Different from other rescue teams, the rescue team from Wenchuan consists of four professional groups: quake-zone rescue group, mountains rescue group, water rescue group and medical rescue group. All rescuers from four groups experienced in Wenchuan quake, and have rich experiences in rescue operation.

During the rescue operation, Li realized learning more professional rescue skills can make the work more efficient and fast. Last year, Wenchuan county sent eight people to receive rescue skills training, and Li was one of them.

“Wenchuan rescue team has experienced the Wechuan Earthquake, Yishu Earthquake and Lushan Earthquake. The team is able to respond to disasters swiftly, ” Wenchuan official commented.
