Progressive Achievements in Water Resources Projects

Progressive achievements have been made in water resources projects. A group of key water conservancy projects are under smooth construction. Outstanding successes have been made in water resources management, the minister said.

  • Projects of the Yangtze River

  • According to Wang, under the support of proactive fiscal policy of the country, 73 percent of designed cubic meters of earth of the consolidating project of the Yangtze River Trunk Dam had been finished by the end of last year.

About 48 percent of designed cubic meters of stone had been completed. Levee of the lower reaches of the Yellow River had been promoted by 544 km in height. All the embankments with height 0.5 meter lower than the standard had been reconstructed to become qualified. Twenty-two percent of embankments of trunk streams of the Songhuajiang River and Nenjiang River have reached standard to resist flood striking every 50 years, 50 percent of them can resist flood hit every 20 years.

  • Returning Land to Lakes

  • Remarkable achievements have been made in returning land to lakes and constructing towns after relocating the original residents. About 120,000 families including 430,000 persons in the Dongtinghu Lake valley have been moved to other places. The storing and irrigating capacity of the Lake Dam increased by 3 billion cubic meters; 140,000 families involving 550,000 residents have been moved from the Boyang Lake valley. The storing capacity of the dam increased by more than five billion cubic meters. Among the projects of the 200 dangerous dams fixed for reconstruction from 1998 to 2000, 90 percent have been completed.

In 2001, the central authorities invested another 3.5 billion yuan in consolidating shabby and dangerous dams.

  • Projects Under Smooth Construction

  • Key hydro projects are under smooth construction. The Manla Water Control Project in Tibet Autonomous Region has been put into operation. Many hydro projects have been finished, too, including hydro junction projects in Jiangya, Feilaixia Gorge and Wangfuzhou, harnessing projects of Wangyuhe River, Taifuhe River, main stream of Huaihe River and Taihu Lake, and the construction of south lines of the Hangjiahu Lake and Surrounding levee.

  • Plants Put Into Operation

  • The principal parts of the projects of Xiaolangdi Hydroelectric Plant, Wuluwati and Wanjiazhai have been concluded, and the hydro projects started to create benefits for the country.

Items such as projects of estuary watercourse of the Huaihe River and aid-the-impoverished project in Yanghuang of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region are under construction in accordance with the plan.

  • Key Projects of 10th "Five-Year" Plan

  • Key hydro projects of the 10th "Five-Year" Plan including those of Baise, Ni'erji reservoir, Linyi Port, Shapotou, and Zipingpu were launched. Full-strength construction was unfolded.

Construction of some water resources projects to transmit water of the Yellow River to Shanxi Province and have been further strengthened. Harnessing projects of the Heihe River and Tarim River have been unfolded.

Capacity of Water, Electricity Machines in Growth

China reported 1.47 million hectares of new irrigated areas in 2001. The output capacity of grain was increased by 700 million kilograms. Another 1.1 billion cubic meters of water can be saved in the new year.

Capacity of water and electricity machines installed in 2001 for hydro systems reached 232 million kw.

By the end of 2001, China has had 40,000 small hydropower stations with the capacity of hydro machines reaching 26.40 million kw, accounting for one third of the total capacity of hydro power machines of the country.

China to Increase Hydro-power Generating Capacity

China is drafting a plan to speed up its development of small hydro-power stations with their generating capacity to increase by 6 million kilowatts in five years.

Statistics indicate that one-third of China's counties and one-fourth of its population use electricity generated by the small stations, and in 1999, the operational income of the stations reached more than 34 billion yuan.

  • UN Institution in China

  • A UN institution was established Tuesday in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, to promote the construction of small hydropower stations.

It is expected to make more contributions to worldwide cooperation in the area of renewable energy, especially in promoting cooperation and exchanges in developing small hydro-power stations.
