Chinese President Hu Jintao met Wednesday with US Vice President Dick Cheney.

Recalling his visit to the United States two years ago, Hu expressed his appreciation to Cheney for his warm hospitality during his stay. This visit left deep impression in my mind and was unforgettable till now, said Hu.

Hu also expressed that he wished to meet Bush in the latter half of this year, saying the Sino-US relations have seen new development since his last visit to the United States. Leaders of the two sides maintained frequent contact, and exchanged views on issues of common concern.

The splitting activities by the "Taiwan Independence" forces constitute the biggest threat to the peace and stability of the Taiwan Straits, said the Chinese President.

"We hope that the United States could observe its commitment to adhere to the one-China policy, earnestly follow the three Sino-US joint communiques, oppose 'Taiwan Independence' and any wording oration by the Taiwan leaders attempting to change Taiwan's status quo, and not to send wrong signals to the Taiwan authorities," Hu told Cheney.

Hu said the Chinese government adheres to "peaceful reunification, and one China, two systems", and is committed to the peaceful solution of the Taiwan issue, but China will not allow "Taiwan Independence".

Cheney remembers well of Hu's visit to the United States. He extended personal greetings to Hu from US President George W. Bush, who is looking forward to meeting Hu in the near future.

Cheney said the US will make efforts to strengthen and enrich US-China relationship.

He said the development of US-China relations has brought great substantial benefits for the two peoples, and exerted important influence on international and regional peace and stability.

The US appreciates China's positive role on the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula, said Cheney.

Cheney said that the US government will continue to adhere to the one-China policy, which was based on the three joint communiques between the US and China, not support "Taiwan Independence" and oppose any unilateral action to change the status quo of the Taiwan Straits.
