Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan said in Beijing Sunday that China is opposed to any comments or activities that threaten the personal safety of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

In response to a question from the press on Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's speeches against Arafat's safety, Kong said President Arafat is the legitimate Palestinian leader electedby the Palestinian people.

"We are opposed to any comments or activities that threaten thepersonal safety of him (Arafat) and call for the Israeli side to be cautious with its comments and deeds so as to prevent the regional situation from further deteriorating," Kong said.

On a recent occasion, Sharon openly stated that Israel is no longer bound by the commitment with the United States on not harming Arafat physically.
