The People's Daily describes the decision made by the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee on Hong Kong's electoral methods in 2007 and 2008 another important move to solve issues of constitutional development in Hong Kong, following the interpretations of the Basic Law.

Based on the interpretations of the Basic Law, the NPC Standing Committee Monday deliberated Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa's report on whether the electoral methods in Hong Kong need to be amended and decided to make some modifications on methods for selecting the chief executive in 2007 and forming the Legislature Council in 2008 in the region.

In an editorial to be published Tuesday, the newspaper says the decision is in complete compliance with the practical situation in Hong Kong and concerned regulations in the Basic Law.

The modification is made to maintain Hong Kong's long-term prosperity and stability as well as to protect the basic interests of Hong Kong and the nation, says the editorial.

It notes that the decision is helpful to dissolve disputes over Hong Kong's constitutional development which has occurred for a long time. The decision will help to guide Hong Kong people to reach a common understanding over the electoral methods.

The editorial calls for the Hong Kong government and its people to have a proper understanding of the decision and implement it inan all-round way. It also calls for Hong Kong people to get united to build a better future for the region.
