MOSCOW, April 23 (Xinhua) -- Russian police along with their Ukrainian colleagues went on a large-scale manhunt for a shooting suspect in the southwestern city of Belgorod after he allegedly shot and killed six people, the Interior Ministry said Tuesday.

The suspect, Sergei Pomazun, 31, allegedly shot and killed six people in Belgorod downtown shop and street on Monday. He had formerly served a prison term and was released in 2012.

According to the Russian Investigative Committee, it is going to check the reports that the Belgorod police did not properly respond to the numerous complaints of the suspect's parents who have hinted at the aggressive and erratic behavior of their son.

"In 2013 alone, he (Pomazun) was visited by police inspectors six times," Interior Ministry press service said.

The Investigative Committee denied media reports that Pomazun could be mentally troubled.

"The medico-legal tests will be conducted after the suspect is detained," a spokesperson told a news briefing.

Border troops of Russia and Ukraine have been on high alert to prevent possible escape of the suspect across the border.

Belgorod, the regional capital, is located 700 km south of Moscow and only 40 km from the Ukrainian border.

Police initially suspected two men were involved in the shooting spree, which happened Monday inside and outside a hunting equipment shop. The gunman opened fire using a rifle he had just bought in the shop.

Belgorod city authorities declared two-day mourning in the city.
