The Japanese Coast Guard said Friday that one of a total of six Japanese crew members was dead after their vessel collided with a Sierra Leone-registered cargo and capsized, according to local media.

The incident took place at 1:30 a.m. local time when the 500- ton Japanese vessel collided with the 3000-ton foreign cargo about 11 km west of Japan's Izu Oshima, about 100 km south of Tokyo.

Rescuers said Friday evening that the other four rescued had all suffered cardiac arrest and they were still searching for the last crew member that remains missing.

Local authorities dispatched coast guard patrol vessels and airplanes to search the whereabouts of the missing people after they received reports by a nearby ship.

All 13 crew members, including Chinese nationals, of the Sierra Leonean cargo were in safe condition, according to reports.

The Japan Transport Safety Board sent three officials Friday to the coast guard's office in Shimoda, Shizuoka prefecture, to determine the cause of the tragedy.
