For the first time in history goal-line technology will be used during a Dutch professional soccer league match between FC Utrecht and Roda JC Kerkrade on Saturday, the Dutch football association KNVB announced on Tuesday.

In June the KNVB decided to start a project, called Arbitration 2.0, to modernize the refereeing of professional soccer matches, which also included extra assistants (a fifth and sixth official) and investigating the possible use of a video referee.

The total budget of the project amounts to 500,000 euros for two years. Given the costs of the purchase, the installation and transportation of the Hawk-Eye system it can only be used on three locations.

It will be used during 10 home games of FC Utrecht, starting on September 28, six matches in Feyenoord stadium De Kuip in Rotterdam next year, including the Dutch Cup Final on April 20 and after that it will be moved to Ajax stadium the Amsterdam Arena for the Dutch Super Cup Final.

The use of goal-line technology is not new in European football. Since the start of this season the Dubbed Goal Decision System was introduced in the English Premier League. The sport's international governing body FIFA tested with the Goal Control system during the Confederations Cup in Brazil this year.
