BEIJING, May 6, (ChinaMil) -- The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) practiced the system of voluntary service during the revolutionary war period. After the New China was founded, the country set out to escalate the construction of military modernization and regularization.

On July 30, 1955, the Military Service Law of the People's Republic of China was passed through deliberation, and it stipulated to implement the compulsory military service system.

On May 31, 1984, the revised Military Service Law of the People's Republic of China stipulated to implement the military service system based on the compulsory military service system as the main body with compulsory servicemen combined with voluntary servicemen and militiamen combined with reserve service personnel.

On December 29, 1998, the further revised Military Service Law of People's Republic of China deleted the part of "based on the compulsory military service system as the main body" and shortened the service period of compulsory servicemen. It reformed the active service system of voluntary servicemen and perfected the reserve service system.

From 2008 to 2011, the State Council and the Central Military Commission (CMC) adjusted the enlisted main body of servicemen from the original rural and urban youth awaiting job placement to all levels of college graduates, which deepened the reform of the non-commissioned officer system, and improved and perfected the Military Service Law of the People's Republic of China for the third time.
