Three people were killed in two separate landslides in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Saturday, bringing the death toll of a devastating typhoon to nine, local authorities said.

The first landslide occurred around 1:50 a.m. at the village of Hongshan in Cangwu County, according to sources with the fire service authorities in Wuzhou City, which administers the county.

More than one house was toppled by the landslide, burying a senior villager, witnesses said.

The second landslide that occurred around 3:50 a.m. at the village of Sifeng in the same county buried two people, villagers said.

As of 11 a.m., the bodies of all three buried people have been retrieved. Rescuers are further combing the sites for possible casualties.

Both landslides were believed to be caused by downpours induced by Typhoon Utor.

Downpours and floods triggered by the typhoon have already left two people dead and nearly 500,000 others affected in seven cities, according to Guangxi's civil affairs department. Economic losses are estimated at 111 million yuan (18.15 million U.S. dollars).

Utor, the 11th typhoon that hit China this year, also left four people dead and four others missing in neighboring Guangdong Province.
