TOKYO, July 22 -- Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said here Tuesday that he is willing to hold talks with his South Korean counterpart Yun Byung-se on the sidelines of a series of regional talks early next month in Myanmar.

Although Kishida had talked with Yun twice in the past, he said he would like to continue their "frank exchange" as the two countries' relations are at odds over territorial dispute and Japan's recent moves regarding its wartime history.

Local reports said that Kishida wants to arrange a meeting between leaders of the two countries through his meeting with Yun.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has not yet held formal bilateral meeting with South Korean President Park Geun-hye due to frayed bilateral ties since he took office in December 2012.

Kishida told a press conference that Japan hopes to develop bilateral relations from future-oriented and broader perspectives by holding ministerial dialogues with South Korean leaders.
