HR: five reasons for difficulty in finding jobs

One is that their real working experience is quite limited. Years of experience abroad distance them from the domestic market, and language skills and foreign diplomas do not compensate sufficiently.

Second, high expectations. It is a fact that many families invest their whole fortune to fund a student for overseas study. This leads to unrealistic expectations on the part of both parents and students in terms of their career prospects. It is not easy to come to terms with an expenditure numbered in millions against a monthly salary of thousands.

Third, many students do not think things through clearly before going abroad, and this has a direct impact on their future problems. Because they do not have a clear career plan when choosing their subject and their field of work, they are likely to experience future difficulties when looking for jobs.

Fourth, returnees can sometimes be unreliable. They move on whenever a job fails to meet their emotional and material expectations. However, endless job-hopping does not solve the ultimate problem, and indeed it turns into a vicious circle.

Fifth, returned overseas students are under more social pressure than others. As they are subject to higher expectations, they aspire to make a more significant contribution to society. But with their background in foreign education, it makes them less adaptable than local students.

Find a new path

Though the employment situation is not so bright for returnees, some still fight through adversity to find what they want.

On the whole, returned overseas Chinese point out that a returnee cannot simply wait for opportunities to present themselves. You have to recognize your strengths and weaknesses in order to be prepared for the workplace. At the same time, it is important to keep abreast of new skills in accordance with social and market changes.

Professor Xu Li from the School of Public Administration of Zhejiang University points out that returned overseas Chinese have advantages in language, critical thinking and global prospective. Many government departments are in particularly need of such talents to expand international investment and foreign exchange. Therefore, returnees should be very clear about where their strengths lie.
