Tourists have to queue for at least one hour to enter Beijing's Tsinghua and Peking University this summer, the Beijing Evening Post reports.
When the gate of Peking University opens at 2 p.m., crowds of people usually flood to the narrow gate; it is even more crowded than the Beijing subway during rush hour. Due to high temperatures and huge crowds, many tourists feel exhausted and lose their sense of excitement.
Scalpers have also found business opportunities from those more determined tourists. Some were found to have taken several tourists in their car and charged 60 yuan each.
Most tourists were parents taking their children to visit the top two universities in China. They view it as a means of encouraging students to study hard for a better future.
On every summer holiday, Tsinghua University and Peking University are full of tourists.
Some students feel annoyed about floods of tourists and their ill-bred behaviors. Litter is everywhere and ancient architectures are vandalized by graffiti etching.
A Peking University alumnus argued that universities should focus on academic studies rather than receiving tourists.
To organize the visits, universities can adopt online booking, suggested Luo Yameng, an expert in urban management.
Some experts suggested parents and students visit other top universities in Beijing, besides Tsinghua University and Peking University.
