PARIS, May 27 (Xinhua) -- French police on Monday made a global appeal for assistance via International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) to locate a diamond necklace stolen last week during the Cannes film festival.

The jewery stolen on May 22 "was one of 20 items on display under the surveillance of security guards at the time of the theft," said the INTERPOL in a statement.

"The diamond and pink gold necklace, worth an estimated EUR 1.92 million (2.48 million U.S. dollars), was stolen during a private party at the Hotel Eden Roc in Antibes, France, organized by Swiss jeweler Di Grisogono," the INTERPOL added.

At the request of the French authorities, INTERPOL has issued a Purple Notice to police in its 190 members, asking them to report to local or national police or the INTERPOL General Secretariat in Lyon, France, once any clues about the theft or whereabouts of the stolen item were discovered.

Purple Notices are used to seek or provide information on modi operandi, objects, devices and concealment methods used by criminals.
