Nepal's apex court halts deals with India on immigration, checkpost

KATHMANDU, July 9 (Xinhua) -- The Supreme Court of Nepal ordered the government not to sign agreements with India regarding upgrading the immigration system at Tribhuvan International Airport and setting up an Indian checkpost at Illam district of Nepal, ahead of Indian Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid's visit.

The Indian foreign minister will arrive Tuesday for a two-day official visit to Nepal.

The two sides are preparing to sign the two agreements during Khursid's visit.

Officials from Nepal and India last month reached an agreement to entrust India with the task of improving the immigration system at the country's only international airport in the capital. Nepal government's plan to hand over the management of airport to India is widely criticized in the country.

Meanwhile, India's plan to set up a checkpost in Illam district has also evoked controversy.
