NAIROBI, July 11 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police said Thursday they have arrested eight Nepalese women at a nightclub in Nairobi after recovering four grammes of heroin from them.
Divisional police commander Vitalis Otieno told Xinhua the eight women were among 13 people who were arrested in the Makena Bar and Restaurant during a raid on Wednesday night.
"We raided a night club in Gigiri and arrested eight Nepalese women with four grammes of heroin. We also arrested the owner of the bar and his wife who are assisting us with the investigations, " Otieno told Xinhua by telephone.
He said the suspects, who had a temporary work permits to work elsewhere but not at the club, were arrested following a tip off from members of the public that some of the patrons at the night club were consuming narcotics.
"We are still looking at their documents before arraigning them in court later today. These ladies do no speak English or Swahili and were dancing as other revelers watch and give them money," Otieno said.
The arrests come as the authorities in the East African nation have stepped up raids and searchers at the local pubs and restaurants to flush out criminal s and drug dealers.
On Sunday, more than 200 underage revelers, all students, were arrested by the police in several bars within Nairobi. Cases of drug trafficking have been on the rise recently with more arrests made, including Nigerians, at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi.
Police have intensified operations on drug traffickers in Kenya with more than 20 foreigners deported over the offense in the past month alone.
Kenya recently signed a bilateral agreement with some Western nations that among others allows the countries to cooperate on sharing intelligence on drug trafficking crime.
The deportation and increased surveillance came after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered stern action against illicit drug traffickers, saying foreigners suspected to have engaged in the vice should be deported from the country.
Kenyatta also directed the National Police Service to tighten law enforcement measures to deal with cross-border illicit drug trafficking to wipe out the menace in the country.
