1,000 unsafe appliances seized from warehouse

Shanghai's quality watchdog seized nearly 1,000 substandard home appliances that posed potential safety risks at a warehouse yesterday.

Electric water heaters, gas cookers and cooker hoods were found to lack safety protection devices and carried a logo and a name in Chinese very similar to that of Sakura, a Taiwan-based home appliance producer known for its range hoods and water heaters.

Officials would not immediately say whether they were real or fake.

These products with quality problems were piled up at the warehouse in Zhuanqiao area.

"The gas cookers are not installed with the flame-out protection device, while the water heaters and range hoods have no ground protection device in case of an electrical short," said Ye Jin, an expert with the Shanghai Institute of Quality Inspection and Technical Research.

The packages indicated the substandard products were made in Jiading District, while warehouse workers said they were produced in Guangdong Province.

The Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau is testing the substandard products at labs.

Illegal proceeds made from sales of the products will be confiscated, and the warehouse owner will be fined one to three times the amount of the illegal sales, said Xiong Xinjian, an official of the bureau's patrol team.
