District checks up on seniors living alone (2)

Household registration statistics show there are 209,700 senior citizens over 60 years old living in Hongkou district, the Shanghai Morning Post reported. They make up 26.54 percent of the district's population.

The social workers do more than just check up on the seniors in the district. They help with everyday problems that no one else is around to solve.

In one case, an elderly woman with poor eyesight complained to a social worker during one of the calls that she hadn't eaten for more than a day because her rice cooker was broken, the staff member said. When a social worker sent someone over, he found that the woman was simply pushing wrong button on the appliance, which actually worked just fine.

The Hongkou Senior Citizen Affairs Committee Office has been checking up on seniors over the phone since August 23, the day it launched a hotline that the district's seniors can use to call to arrange to have services delivered to their homes, including housekeeping, meal delivery and maintenance.

Gong said that the hotline has received more than 800 phone calls since it opened.
