VIENNA, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso on Thursday called on European Union (EU) members to reach an agreement on the EU's budget for 2014-2020 following a meeting with Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann.
Barroso criticized some governments for taking a "very restrictive view" on the level of future spending, saying that these governments must be prepared to undertake fiscal consolidation and financial reform as well as strengthen the euro.
Both leaders agreed that the EU should promote the employment, research, and enlarge investments on infrastructure as well as education.
Barroso also expreseed concern about the future of the EU, urging member states to strive hard to buoy the growth and employment in order to cope with challenges.
