ROME, Aug. 4 -- Three Somali women were reported missing during their crossing from North Africa to Italy, according to a group of migrants who reached the tiny isle of Lampedusa overnight on Sunday.

The 90 survivors said that they were forced to throw into the sea three women who were travelling with them after they died from hardship during the five-day crossing.

The migrants were first rescued by a merchant ship plying its route in the area and then were helped to transfer from their wrecked boat to the Italian island of Lampedusa, which is located between Sicily Island and North Africa.

The group was moved to the island's emergency centers, where hundreds of African migrants have been accomodated over the past few days, according to local reports.

Since the early 2000s, Lampedusa has become a primary European entry point for migrants, and is usually rocked by new immigration waves with the summer and good weather conditions.

Thousands were reportedly lost at sea, of which dozens also in the past few weeks, while making the crossing since North Africa and the Middle East fell into political uncertainties.
