27th Southeast Asia Games opens in Nay Pyi Taw

The official opening ceremony of 2013 Southeast Asian Games is underway in Nay Pyi Taw, the capital of Myanmar.

The three-hour ceremony includes a performance by 9,000 people. The event includes a light show and traditional dances performed by school children from around the country.

Former Southeast Asia Games medalists have been carrying the torch in relays from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw. More than 9,000 athletes from 11 ASEAN countries and regions will compete n 33 sports.

The Myanmar Games will continue until December 22. The country last hosted the Games in 1969, topping the medal tally with 57 golds.
