Report highlights children’s plight

China is in urgent need of a legislated legal frame work covering the protection of children rights said experts in Beijing Tuesday, which was also Universal Children's Day.

With the nation reeling from a number of shocking child abuse cases, the China Philanthropy Research Institute (CPRI) with Beijing Normal University released a report that reveals wide ranging difficulties in the protection of children including a lack of appropriate and effect legislation and deficiencies with children welfare and protection organizations.

"There are a lot of laws but the existing ones have proven to be impractical and ineffective, and there's not yet a comprehensive legal system to protect children rights," said Li Ying, lawyer and director of the Beijing-based Yuanzhong Gender Development Center.

Laws forbid violence against children but there are few organizations offering legal assistance to abused children, she added.
