Women stabbed six times in Chongwenmen park, suspects at large

Police confirmed Wednesday an investigation is underway into the stabbing of a female resident in the Chongwenmen area Tuesday, and said they have also stepped up patrols in the area.

A middle-aged woman was stabbed six times with a knife by two unknown assailants as she walked in the Ming City Walls Ruins Park at 4 am Tuesday, the Legal Mirror reported.

She sustained five stab wounds to the back and one to the throat, and was taken to Beijing Hospital, Dongcheng district, at 4 am Tuesday, an anesthetist from the hospital posted on his Sina microblog Tuesday.

"After timely treatment, her life is not at risk, but the cut on her throat will cause trouble with eating and drinking afterward," wrote the anesthetist.

Chongwenmen police said they are sending patrols out 24 hours a day.

"We are hastening to track down the criminals. There is no need to be scared," said a policewoman.

A staff member, surnamed Li at the Ming ruins park, said they did not learn of the attack until police told them.

"The park has no walls so people can come in freely," he said, adding it does have its own security guards.

"The park is 1.5 kilometers long so guards can't cover all the space. The patrols mainly deal with uncivilized behavior rather than serious crimes," Li said.

Last Sunday night, a doctoral student at the Chinese Academy of Sciences was stabbed on the south side of Baofusi Bridge, Haidian district, and the suspect is still at large, reported the Beijing Morning Post Tuesday.

Chen Tianben, a professor with Chinese People's Public Security University said when the New Year draws near, the crime rate often rises.

"The crime rates are higher when the migrant population begins to return home. Some have the psychology that they can steal things without being found after returning home," he said.
