Anyone can fail in 'competition of family background' (3)

Powerful officials are at the top of today's Chinese society. Such social reality encourages utilitarianism, and fully explains the rapidly growing number of participants of the national civil service exam. Every year, millions of people choose to cross the single-plank bridge of the national civil service exam, but most candidates know clearly that taking the exam is no different from buying a lottery ticket. Once they are lucky enough to become a government official with a high feeling of safety as well as stable and considerable benefits, they may win their children a ticket to the "competition of family background."

Speaking of the corruption in Russia, Medvedev once said that "Wide popularity of civil servants' jobs is a sign of corruption." Leaving aside the statement's validity for China, the fact that government posts top the list of career choices among the young and are widely viewed to be the happiest occupation speaks volumes about problems with the social equality and justice. At present, the young people strain every nerve to enter the "system", not to improve social governance and administration, but for the chance to enjoy privilege. This gives cause for alarm.
