Gangbuhe, head of the agriculture and animal husbandry bureau of Zhenglan Banner of Xilin Gol, said the local traffic system has stopped, and people have to travel on foot or by horse.

The traffic management department in Inner Mongolia said heavy snow has led to the closure of expressways and the suspension of passenger transport on the roads.

There have been more than 180 road accidents on the Inner Mongolia section of the Beijing-Tibet Expressway since the beginning of November.

The lack of pasture grass and the rising price of forage has squeezed profit margins of the herdsmen.

Yan Zhigang, a herdsman, said the price of grass has grown from 650 yuan per tonne to 1,000 yuan per tonne after the snow came, and has raised the cost of keeping cattle.

According to a report from the agriculture department of Inner Mongolia more than 1.5 million tonnes of grass and forage is needed to relieve the disaster-hit area in the region.

The snow disaster is still lingering in the central and eastern part of Inner Mongolia. Local governments of all districts and banners in the region have organized disaster relief teams to help the people cope with the extreme weather.
