ISLAMABAD, March 18 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 persons including policemen and lawyers were injured Monday afternoon when twin blasts followed by intensive firing hit Pakistan's northwestern provincial capital of Peshawar, local media reported.

According to local media reports, the two explosions took place in the courtyard of the Judicial Complex located at the Jail Road in downtown Peshawar, the provincial capital of Pakistan's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Soon after the blasts, intensive firing started near the courts where some high profile prisoners were facing prosecution.

Local media reported that some unknown militants including suicide bombers attacked the complex.

Police, security forces and rescue teams rushed to the site and shifted the injured to the Lady Reading Hospital.

Security forces cordoned off the area and started preparation for the operation against the militants reportedly hiding in the court area, reports said.
