Only four of the 26 people who called to express an interest in adopting a dog from the Beijing police dog pound, acting in cooperation with an animal charity for the first time, finally chose a new pet Saturday.
"Twenty-six people registered in advance, and 19 showed up Saturday. The four who picked dogs are organizing their proof of residence in Beijing before taking the dogs home," said Yang Zhihong, media officer of the Ta Foundation, a private foundation focusing on animal welfare, which co-hosted the event with the Municipal Public Security Bureau (PSB).
This is the first time the PSB has cooperated with an NGO on dog adoption, although it does hold its own regular adoption day every Friday.
Yang said he is not discouraged by the relatively low turnout, as Ta only started promoting the event on Wednesday.
"The time was short, but the effect was good. I have confidence in the future, as the phone has been ringing off the hook since Saturday," she told the Global Times Sunday.
In the dog pound at Qiliqu in Changping district Saturday morning, more than 100 rescue dogs were locked in separate cages in a large outbuilding. Many of them are mongrels, and the sound of the barking is overwhelming.
"I've known about Qiliqu dog pound for a long time. But because its [own] adoption event is on Friday, I have no time since I have to work," said Liu Shuo, who adopted a small black and brown dog on Saturday.
