BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- China has been closely watching changes in the situation in Syria and is deeply concerned about the country's ongoing violence, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said on Friday.

Hong said at a daily press briefing that China believes a political solution will best meet the fundamental interests of the Syrian people and will be in line with the common interests of the international community.

China urges all parties in Syria to immediately cease fire and start a political transition process led by the Syrian people on the basis of the Geneva communique so as to restore security and stability in the country, according to Hong.

China has taken and will take necessary measures to ensure the safety of Chinese citizens in Syria, Hong said.
